I panned an aggressively mediocre (to passively bad) Regency romance novel on Amazon and now the author and her mum are mad at me.

Yay! Do you have a link? These are usually hilarious.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) it's not a straightforward case of commenting on the review. I panned the book and then she whined about me on twitter and downvoted me on Amazon. :)

Is that the one you live-tweeted? It was aggressively bad.

No, a different one. Yes, that one was aggressively bad. This one is aggressively mediocre.

Oh no, not her mum!

It's such a bad idea for writers to answer reviews. I make an exception in the case of egregious factual error, but even then, it's often a bad idea.

I hope the situation remains only amusing.

Hahah well, she hasn't commented on it (yet--I feel like it's a matter of time) but here's what happened: I put the review up, which gave the book (called "Trials of Artemis") two stars for mediocre prose, shitty research, and being boring when it's not offensive (it has a hero of the Wounded Emo Abuse Survivor sort, and that trope ENRAGES me because it's seriously wrong AND it portrays a dangerously inaccurate picture of abuse survivors). In the review, I included a few of the historical inaccuracies that I found too jarring to cope with.

Basically five minutes after it went up it was downvoted twice. And I was like, hm. So then I went and looked at all the other reviews and discovered that a lot of the positive ones had comments from the author thanking the reviewer. So I was like HM.

So then I went and read her twitter feed and found that she had called me out and published a link to my review for her twitter followers, all six of them, and several of them had derisive comments and she said that her mum had been sending her angry emails all afternoon about how stupid I am, disputing the accuracy of one of the historical details I said had been wrong.

I still don't think I'm wrong about that, by the way. I think her mum reads those "what to name your baby" websites which are all full of crap. :)

Oh--and because petty is as petty does, I went and downvoted all the reviews that she'd clearly got her friends to write about how wonderful it is. :)

OK, I'm a bad person. This made me giggle.
